BIG DRY ARM, Fort Peck Reservoir -- After two weeks of waiting for the ice to clear, we finally started our annual walleye spawning operation.

We even had to bust through a thin layer of ice at the Rock Creek boat ramp on Thursday when boating our equipment to the spawning site. The ice even got the last laugh on us when the winds shifted it back towards the ramp at the end of the day and were forced to take an alternate route around it.

Our trap nets produced fairly well considering we only had a total of eight out and water temperatures were 40-45 degrees. We ended up capturing 15 ripe female walleye, 16 green, and 80 males. One trap net alone contained 28 males.

We also set out an additional eight trap nets to increase our netting efforts in an attempt to capture more spawners. We will continue to set more trap nets as the spawn progresses.

If you're interested in spending a day, two or three as a volunteer on the Walleye Spawn in 2008, call the Fort Peck fisheries office at (406) 526-3471 or the Glasgow regional office at (406) 228-3700.
