Fort Peck Walleye Spawn Update: April 20, 2008

First walleye eggs are taken
as winds blow, ice forms

BIG DRY ARM, Fort Peck Reservoir -- Today we were unable to check our trap nets due to the high winds that got the waves rolling down the Big Dry Arm.

Water temperatures decreased to 41 degrees. By the end of the day, ice began to form around anything that got wet.

It unfortunately looks like this cold spell will continue into next week and likely put a damper on the spawning operation.

On another note, we did hold our first walleye spawn for the year. It was a relatively small egg-take, but it was the one that put us on the board for the 2008 season. We ended up spawning 29 ripe females that gave us around 3 million eggs.

If you're interested in spending a day, two or three as a volunteer on the Walleye Spawn in 2008, call the Fort Peck fisheries office at (406) 526-3471 or the Glasgow regional office at (406) 228-3700.
