Fort Peck Walleye Spawn Update: April 21, 2008

A good day with the nets
despite cold water temps

From HEATH HEADLEY
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks
BIG DRY ARM, Fort Peck Reservoir -- Today turned out better than expected, mostly because we were able to check all our trap nets.

Our trap nets actually produced fairly well despite the big drop in temperature after the cold front passed through yesterday. We actually had one trap where the water temperature was 36 degrees but for the most part temperatures were around 40 degrees.

Today we ended up bringing back 22 ripe and 29 green female walleyes. It should be noted that our trap nets had the chance to "fish" an extra day since we were unable to check them the previous day.

By the looks of things we should have enough ripe females to hold another spawn tomorrow. It should be interesting to see if some of the green females will ripen up with the drop in water temperature. It looks like we will hold our next spawn tomorrow.
