Fort Peck Walleye Spawn Update: April 23, 2008

Cold weather hurts efforts
as spawn continues to be slow

From HEATH HEADLEY
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks
BIG DRY ARM, Fort Peck Reservoir -- Today continued to be slow for walleye numbers. We only ended up bringing in 22 green and 5 ripe females even though we increased our netting efforts by setting some additional trap nets.

We did have a few females ripen up in our holding pens, but it wasn't as many as we would like to see. I really can't blame them with these cold water temps. Water temperatures still appear to be averaging 42 degrees.

We currently have 43 green females in the holding pens waiting to ripen up, but I doubt we will see much of this due to colder temps. Like last year, we seem to be following a similar pattern with the cooler water temperatures and an abundance of green females that refuse to ripen up. It looks like we will hold another spawn tomorrow.

If you're interested in spending a day, two or three as a volunteer on the Walleye Spawn in 2008, call the Fort Peck fisheries office at (406) 526-3471 or the Glasgow regional office at (406) 228-3700.
