Fort Peck Walleye Spawn Update: April 24, 2008

A crew checks a net on the Big Dry Arm.

Total egg take about 15 million
as cold weather hinders spawn

BIG DRY ARM, Fort Peck Reservoir -- It was another cool, crisp day on the waters of Fort Peck. Water temperatures continue to hang in the lower 40's, which are not very conducive to the walleye spawning operation.

Even overall fish numbers in trap nets have declined with the drop in temperature. I actually checked three trap nets in a row that were void of any fish. A majority of the female walleye we are capturing continue to be green.

We only brought back five ripe females to add to the spawn that was held today. Today's egg-take resulted in another 6 million and that should put us in the ball park of approximately 15 million total eggs.

If you're interested in spending a day, two or three as a volunteer on the Walleye Spawn in 2008, call the Fort Peck fisheries office at (406) 526-3471 or the Glasgow regional office at (406) 228-3700.
