Fort Peck Walleye Spawn Update: April 27, 2008![]() make a pleasant day at the spawn From HEATH HEADLEY Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks BIG DRY ARM, Fort Peck Reservoir -- The winds subsided from yesterday allowing us to get out there and check all our traps. It was much more pleasant than the previous day. It looks like quite a few anglers decided to take advantage of the nice day. We are also starting to see a few more volunteers trickle in. Thanks again guys and gals for all the help! Water temperatures are warming slightly, but it is still fairly cool with temperatures ranging from 42 to 45 degrees. It's always good to see a variety of fish species show up in our trap nets with everything from burbot to shorthead redhorse. We were only able to collect 11 ripe and 15 green female walleye from the trap nets today. This a little discouraging since we set out more trap nets and they also had an extra day to fish. Only two female walleye ripened up out of the 30 or so that were being held in the pens. Thirty-one walleye were spawned to give us somewhere around 4 million more eggs. It looks like we will see a big warming trend over the next two days, but it also looks like another cold front is right around the corner. If you're interested in spending a day, two or three as a volunteer on the Walleye Spawn in 2008, call the Fort Peck fisheries office at (406) 526-3471 or the Glasgow regional office at (406) 228-3700.
