Fort Peck Walleye Spawn Update: April 29, 2008

Water temps are warming
in shallows of Big Dry Arm

BIG DRY ARM, Fort Peck Reservoir -- Today was a great day to be out on Fort Peck with the calm conditions and warm temperatures.

To be honest, it was a little warmer than what we have been used to over the past couple weeks.

Some of the shallow water really had the chance to warm up. I suspect some of those areas were able to reach the low to mid 50's by the end of the day.

Unfortunately, our trap nets were much slower than yesterday even with the warmer water temperatures. We only ended up capturing 13 ripe and 3 green female walleye from today's nets. This isn't very encouraging, especially with the lack of green females that were collected. However, these next few days should tell us more.

We did have five additional fish ripen up in our holding pens and this gave us a few more fish to spawn. This gave us a little over 2 million more eggs which should put us around 30 million mark as of today.

If you're interested in spending a day, two or three as a volunteer on the Walleye Spawn in 2008, call the Fort Peck fisheries office at (406) 526-3471 or the Glasgow regional office at (406) 228-3700.
