Fort Peck Walleye Spawn Update: May 2, 2008

Signs are starting to show
walleye spawn is about over

From HEATH HEADLEY

BIG DRY ARM, Fort Peck Reservoir -- Today was another slow day at the walleye spawn. Sorry, still no big fish stories or numbers for that matter.

However, the weather was a vast improvement from the previous day. Water temperatures topped out at 45 degrees today.

We had another small mixture of female walleye, which consisted of 3 ripe, 5 green, and 3 spent. This doesn't bode well for the egg-taking operation considering several traps had some extra fishing time.

We are also seeing some male walleye beginning to "dry up" (releasing little to no milt), yet another sign the walleye spawn is quickly coming to a close. There were only five females that ripened up in the holding pens, so it looks like the next spawn will take place tomorrow.

If you're interested in spending a day, two or three as a volunteer on the Walleye Spawn in 2008, call the Fort Peck fisheries office at (406) 526-3471 or the Glasgow regional office at (406) 228-3700.
