Fort Peck Walleye Spawn Update: May 3, 2008

Water temps hit 50 degrees
for first time during spawn

BIG DRY ARM, Fort Peck Reservoir -- The action is still pretty slow with the walleye spawning operation up here on Fort Peck, but it was a much better day to be out on the lake.

Water temperatures in the upper portion of the Big Dry Arm are gradually rising into the upper 40's and appear to be hitting the 50 degree mark as of this afternoon. This is the first time we have had 50 degree water since the spawning operation began.

Even with the warmer water, our catches were pretty dismal. We only collected 7 greens, 4 ripes, and 2 spent female walleye.

Another small egg-take was held today from only 14 females. It looks like another 2 to 3 million will be added to the total. This should put us somewhere in the neighborhood of 37 million total eggs.
