Fort Peck Walleye Spawn Update: May 4, 2008

Walleye numbers not coming up
despite improving conditions

BIG DRY ARM, Fort Peck Reservoir -- The weather is finally starting to stabilize and water temps are hovering around 50 degrees. Unfortunately, the warmer water still hasn't increased the numbers of egg-laden walleye in our nets.

Trap nets only yielded 5 green, 3 ripe, and 2 spent female walleye today. Currently, we are only holding 9 green females in the holding pens.

This isn't very good considering we were able to capture up to 50 green and 50 ripe females in a single day last year. If something was going to give in the walleye spawning operation, I am afraid it would have taken place over these last few days.

It appears that the late ice and prolonged cold water temperatures have really thrown a wrench into the walleye spawning activity this year up on Fort Peck.
