Walleyes Forever |
Canyon Ferry netting update: April 9, 2008![]() Ron Selden holds up the first walleye of the year. in Canyon Ferry's Merwin traps From ERIC ROBERTS Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks We've got four Merwins up and running, and we're even starting to catch a few fish. We caught our first walleye on Tuesday and we caught another 10 on Wednesday. So far everything has been small males or immature fish. The biggest so far has been 16.5 inches. The majority of the catch today (Wednesday) was off Pond 1, but we are seeing a few walleyes caught off the east shore and in Duck Creek. Water temps are up to 40, so we are starting to see some more movement out of all species. We are catching some really nice rainbows at Duck Creek and we have been catching a few small perch (no spawners yet), a few ling, suckers, and even some kind of grebe. With warm weather in the forecast, I would expect walleye catch to increase over the next few days. Volunteers are always welcome--for more details call my office line at 495-3272 and leave a message. Also, Thursday's scheduled helicopter drop of Christmas tree reefs into the lake was postponed until 10 a.m. Friday. Choppers from the National Guard will be on hand to get the Christmas trees into the lake for perch to spawn on. They are scheduled to start around 10:00 am at the Silos and will likely be finished in 2-3 hours. Come on out and take a look if you are in the neighborhood!
