Walleyes Forever

The Upper Yellowstone Chapter WU
2007 Kids Fishing Day at Dailey Lake

The 18th annual Kids Day at Dailey Lake, south of Livingston, was held on May 18th. Over 200 4th graders from Park and Sweetgrass county schools participated in the field trip, which consisted of various activities throughout the day facilitated by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the Fly Fishing Federation and the Upper Yellowstone Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited.

Members from the Upper Yellowstone Chapter, Gallatin/Madison Chapter, Walleyes Forever and other local boaters volunteered to take kids out fishing as part of the dailey activities.

Other than a brief and minor thunderstorm that blew over, the weather was very nice. Although the fishing wasn't red hot, the kids caught a few perch and at least one walleye. The kids had a great time and the event went well.

We really appreciate the help from the Gallatin Madison Chapter and Walleyes Forever. We always need plenty of boats, and thank these guys for driving over here and helping out.

Dailey Lake Update FWP conducted their spring fish sampling earlier this week. Perch numbers were up, with many in the 12-13 inch range and full of eggs. Walleye numbers remained consistent, but the average size may have increased. There were good numbers of 14-18 inch walleyes. Two big rainbows over 25 inches were also netted.

All the fish seemed plump and healthy. Overall, fisheries biologist Scott Opitz feels the fish population for all species is improving and he was pleased with the results of the sampling.

Low water levels during the past several years likely had a negative effect on fish numbers, but they are working to divert as much water as possible into the lake from Six Mike Creek and hold it. Currently, the lake level is good and boats can be lauched easily from both ramps. -- Darren Raney, President, Upper Yellowstone Chapter Walleyes Unlimited
