Walleyes Forever

2008 Youth Fishing Jamboree

Lake Josephine, Riverfront Park
June 28, 2008

Walleyes Forever and Scheels were among the sponsors for the 20th annual Youth Fishing Jamboree held at Lake Josephine at Riverfront Park on June 28.

There were 71 boys and girls who attended the jamboree with about 100 adults who came with the youths. The youngest fisherman was 3 years old and the oldest was 14. The largest fish - at 6.25 inches - was caught by a 12 year old girl. A total of 422 fish were caught during about two hours of fishing. Six were bass. The rest were mostly sunfish from 3.5 to 5.5 inches.

There were 18 volunteers on hand, including a dozen from Walleyes Forever. Scheels provided prizes and a bag of tackle for every participant. Other sponsors were Magic City Fly Fishers, Billings Yellowstone Kiwanis members with their canoes, Billings Parks and Recreation, Billings Family YMCA and Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Mike Herman, of Pryor Creek Bait Company, donated all of the bait and some bait boxes for prizes. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks made it a free fishing day at the lake from sunrise to sunset for all youths and their parents and guardians.

At the end of the fishing day, all participants were well-fed as Walleyes Forever members barbecued burgers and hot dogs on the Montana PikeMasters grill and served baked beans, chips and some cookies for dessert along with soft drinks and water from Coca-Cola.

Bill Clagg was the primary organizer for the event as he has been for the past 19 years in Billings.
